This Grand Haven backyard had a lot going on - an elevated deck, grade changes, garden beds, and not much holding it all together. The goal was to give it structure. Real, lasting structure that ties the whole space into something that actually makes sense to walk through and use.

We installed a clean two-tone paver patio under the deck as the anchor point. The field pavers have a natural stone look with warm tan and grey tones, and they're framed with a darker charcoal border that gives the whole surface a finished, modern edge. That border detail is one of those things that separates a good patio from a great one - it locks the layout in visually and keeps it from looking like pavers just got dropped on the ground.

From there, we tied in walkways that connect the patio to the rest of the yard, and built retaining walls to define the garden beds and manage the grade along the back of the house. The walls give the planting areas a clean boundary and keep soil where it belongs - which matters a lot on a yard with any kind of slope or elevation change. The curved wall section along the deck line adds a soft contrast to the more geometric patio layout.

Garden bed edging was the final piece. Sharp, consistent lines between the beds and the lawn are what keep a yard looking maintained week after week. It's not glamorous work, but it makes everything else look better. When you add the Japanese maple already on site with its deep red canopy, the whole space has real character.

Structure, function, curb appeal - that's what we were going for here, and that's what we delivered. Hardscaping like this isn't just about looks. It adds usable space to your property and reduces the ongoing maintenance headache that comes with undefined, unedged outdoor areas.
