Natural Slate Patio Base Work in Progress

Most people only care about the finished patio. The pretty stone. The clean edges. The final photos. But here's the thing - none of that matters if the foundation underneath it isn't built right. That's exactly what we're focused on here.

Before a single slate piece goes down, we're building the base that's going to carry this whole patio for years. You can see the crushed stone bed laid out across a large area, with the layout lines spray-painted right onto the gravel. That's how we map out the exact shape and placement before anything gets set. It keeps every cut, every joint, and every section perfectly positioned from the start.

The weed barrier going down underneath is also a big deal. It's one of those things nobody thinks about until they're pulling weeds out of their patio cracks three years later. We don't skip it. Proper drainage, a solid compacted base, and good fabric underneath - that's what separates a patio that holds up from one that shifts, sinks, and looks rough after a couple winters.

This is a large-footprint backyard hardscape - the kind of job where getting the prep work right upfront is the only way to make sure the finished product looks as good as it should.
