Some backyards just have potential written all over them. This one had the space, the setting, and a homeowner with a clear vision - they wanted a real outdoor living area. Not just a slab to set some chairs on. Something with character, with different zones, with a reason to actually go outside and stay there.
So here's what we were working with - a wide open backyard with an existing deck and basically nothing connecting it to the yard. What we ended up with is a full custom natural slate hardscape system that ties everything together. A large fire bowl patio as the main gathering hub, a winding slate path connecting the spaces, and a dedicated pergola pad that anchors a one-of-a-kind ski lift chair swing. Every piece of stone was cut and set to fit the layout - no two pieces the same, and no shortcuts on the joints.
That's the thing about natural slate - it doesn't come pre-cut and uniform. Every piece is different, which means every piece has to be worked into the puzzle carefully. The cuts, the spacing, the joint lines - all of it has to be intentional. That's where the time goes, and that's also where the craftsmanship shows up. Cookie-cutter paver patios are faster. This is not that.
The landscaping side of the job pulls everything together. Curved mulch beds were shaped around the hardscape to soften the edges and give the whole yard a finished, intentional feel. Low-voltage path lights were run throughout to make the space just as usable at night as during the day. The design isn't random - every element has a purpose and a place.
This is the kind of work we genuinely enjoy. When a homeowner comes to us with a big idea and trusts us to figure out how to build it right, that's where we do our best work. Hardscaping and landscaping done together, designed from the start to work as one cohesive space - that's what turns a backyard into something you actually use.
